Environment - SOAR goes carboNZero™
Soar Printing is the first corporate printing company in New Zealand to achieve carboNZeroCertTM certification for their organisation. From installing LED light fittings to gradually phasing in hybrid vehicles, our commitment to sustainability is a top-to-toe effort.
Jenny Carter, Financial Director at Soar, has been thinking green for many months. “The first step of carboNZero certification involved measuring our organisations carbon footprint, for example, how much fuel and energy we use”, she said.
“Now we understand our impact on the global climate, we can manage and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions at source through top management commitment, setting targets and reporting on emissions reduction performance. “
Jenny has recognised a variety of organisational changes to be implemented, such as reducing energy consumption, changing vehicles and recycling. The final leap to zero was achieved by purchasing verified carbon credits from a Palmerston North landfill gas project (the use of methane to generate electricity). These steps were all independently verified prior to achieving certification.
Soar Printing is proud to make a credible and robust carbon neutral claim using the internationally recognised carboNZero certification mark.
Jenny wants clients to understand that their carboNZero certification only relates to their organisation not their products. “We don’t want people to get confused and think, for example, we print carbon neutral books. This is about our carbon footprint as an organisation.”
New Zealand is at the forefront of carbon neutral certification. Developed from over a decade of research at Crown Research Institute, Landcare Research, the carboNZero programme is the world’s first internationally accredited GHG certification scheme under the ISO 14065. Some of Soar’s carboNZero certification reduction initiatives include:
- New car policy that encourages staff into more fuel-efficient motor vehicles
- Replacing fluorescent lighting with LED fittings, which draw less power
- Evaluation of automatic shut off devices for lighting, air-conditioning units
- Staff education about turning off lights, air-conditioning and shutting down PCs when not in use
- Better labeling of recycling bins
