“Nestlé is globally committed to raising environmental standards, so sustainability is vitally important to us when choosing suppliers. Soar Printing fits our sustainability requirements and their service level is fantastic. We feel very well looked after.” Lyle Cates, Point of Purchase Manager, Nestlé NZ Ltd
Designers have been challenging Soar’s printers and pushing the boundaries of our capabilities for years. Fortunately we make a point of staying at the leading edge of technology (otherwise we would still be printing in CMYK!). Possibly the most challenging print job we’ve ever embraced is our latest showcase book, which is called ‘We Can Create’. This book was designed by The Church for their inaugural creative symposium which took place in August and stock was supplied by Spicers Paper. It pushes the envelope on every level, so we’re hoping it will score a 2012 Pride in Print Award.

‘We Can Create’ was not just a single job; it was a multitude of jobs in one. Each stock type used involved new settings and challenges. Cast coated boards, textured stocks, coloured stocks and stock composition (i.e. recycled content, offset, etc…) meant that different ink film weights, printing pressures and press settings were used to achieve the desired results and consistency throughout.

The use of dark-coloured stocks ruled out conventional inks. Instead, opaque white was employed to create vibrant effects and contrast, but this was only the start. Through the careful mixing of tints, opaque white was transformed into other pastel colours. This technique demonstrates how designers can move away from white paper and use dark-coloured stocks to achieve new and exciting designs.

From a binding and finishing point of view, this book has it all. Flat sheets have been mounted to board, pages have been creatively folded, the front cover is de-bossed (a great alternative to embossing) and the whole thing is bound with one and a quarter inch white wiro.
