3 tips for printing a carbon neutral annual report

To give your annual report a point of difference this year, and help your organisation live up to its sustainability objectives, choose a carbon neutral printing service that allows you to use the carboNZero (Cert TM) logo. It will demonstrate that your commitment to the environment is more than skin deep.

Recently Soar Print won a gold Pride in Print award in the ‘Environmental’ category for printing the La Boca Local cookbook. Our other recent carbon neutral printing projects include an adviser’s notebook for Sovereign Insurance, Laura Faire’s Limited Edition Cookery and Auckland Museum’s ‘What’s On’ publication. In New Zealand nobody knows more about carbon neutral printing than us, so you can trust our advice.

Steps to achieving a carboNZero publication:

1. Specify an environmentally-friendly paper stock.
As an example, the La Boca Loca cookbook was printed on Neo Satin from B & F Papers. Fibre for this FSC Mix paper comes from well-managed forests, as certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). It’s whitened using an elemental chlorine-free process.

2. Ensure printing inks are vegetable based.
Conventional printing inks are based on petroleum. They contain high levels of solvent that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere. These inks can also leach into the water table and are more difficult to remove from paper during the paper recycling process. Environmentally-aware printers use inks that are 99% vegetable-based, derived from sources such as corn, walnut, coconut, linseed, canola and soya beans.

3. Choose a carboNZero certified printer.
Soar Printing is the first and only printing organisation in NZ to offer certified carbon neutral printed products and services under the new PAS 2050[1] life-cycle standard. We can prepare a carbon-neutral pathway for your printed project. The end result can display the carboNZero service or product logo, so your customers and suppliers will be aware that you’re making a real effort to be more environmentally sustainable.
