“Don’t cook yourself” – Josh Emett’s recipe for life

Soar Printing sponsors Melanoma New Zealand because life-threatening skin cancer is a constant threat when you live an outdoorsy lifestyle in a high-UV climate.

During Melanoma March, Masterchef host Josh Emett is urging “Don’t cook yourself” in a television ad that aims to raise awareness of melanoma and raise funds for Melanoma New Zealand. Watch the television ad.

Why is Josh an ambassador for Melanoma New Zealand? It’s a sad story.

“My dear father Roger passed away on 1st April 2011, one year after having been diagnosed with Stage 1V metastatic melanoma. A month prior to his diagnosis Dad had been tramping and kayaking in the Abel Tasman National Park and was feeling fit and healthy. He had also been my wing-man when I competed in the Coast-to-Coast, and his love of life and sense of adventure made him my hero.”  Read all of Josh’s story.

Melanoma New Zealand aims to prevent avoidable deaths from melanoma and support New Zealanders who are affected by melanoma. They also fund research carried out by their subsidiary the Melanoma Research Institute of New Zealand. To do their important work, they need donations. You can donate online or go to the Melanoma Givealittle page.

Do a regular head-to-toe check

Melanoma diagnosed in its early stage can be successfully treated by surgery. If a melanoma is discovered when still less than 1mm thick, the prognosis is excellent. Melanoma New Zealand recommends you check your entire body regularly, including skin not normally exposed to the sun. You should ask for help from someone else to check difficult-to-see areas, such as your back, neck and scalp. Follow the ‘Ugly Duckling’ rule – if you notice a mole or skin lesion that looks out of place or feels different from the others, see a doctor. Read more about early detection.
