Experts say that 70% of purchase decisions are made in store. So while you still need to drive people to the store with other forms of advertising, it’s crucial to get your point-of-sale material right. Five things to think about for point of purchase marketing:

  • You have just three seconds to grab a customer’s attention. So your promotional print communications need to be eye-catching, clear and single-minded. Trying to transmit five messages at the same time will get you nowhere. Simple is always best.
  • While digital screen point-of-sale is trying to get established in supermarkets, it’s not living up to the promises.  Printed card displays are still the most cost-effective way to communicate in store.
  • Design and colour palette for point of sale printing needs to fit with your overall brand. Even when you’re having a sale, your brand will benefit from a consistent look and tone of voice. If you don’t have one agency doing it all, make sure your agencies are all supporting your brand.
  • When it comes to sales promotions, remember one big promotion a year will simply cause a spike in sales that will quickly revert to normal levels. If you want a more sustained effect, plan for two or three sales promotions a year and make them work with other activities. A more constant sales promotion presence in the market helps to drive consistently good sales and leverage the awareness generated by your other brand communications.
  • It’s best not to let your brand or product differentiation rest purely on price. Give your customers a powerful (preferably unique) reason to prefer your product. When confronted with a choice between your product and another one that’s the same price or even marginally cheaper, they’ll choose you.
